Who Will Bury You? (2018)

As a third culture kid and the product of an interethnic marriage, I constantly grapple with questions surrounding my identity. What does it mean to belong? Is it even a possible reality for those of us who have sacrificed limbs to multiple worlds? How can multiple identities be reconciled to form a singular self? Is it necessary to be whole?

Who Will Bury You? (2018) explores the meaning of belonging through inevitable death and funeral rites. Shot with my younger sister on our father’s ancestral land in Mulanje and interpreting select themes of Ngonde (Nyakyusa) burial rituals from our mother’s ethnic background, Who Will Bury You? is an exploration of life at death and the inevitable question of who will claim this body when I cease to exist in it. Depicting a young, faceless woman ready to die, Who Will Bury You? imagines the journey of calling for death, the ritual behind leaving the land of the living, and acceptance into the afterlife, whatever that means.
